About Orissa Association for the Blind

The Orissa Association for the Blind is the oldest and pivotal Organization, committed to work for the education, training, rehabilitation and employment of the visually impaired community across the state of Odisha. It was on 29th April,1975 the Orissa Association for the Blind was born in the heart of Bhubaneswar. It was registered on the society registration act in 1976. The then Chief-Minister of Odisha Mr. Nilamani Routray was pleased enough to grant a piece of land in 1977-78 on which the present building stands. In 1981, the 1st Vocational Training Centre for VI adult men and women was established with support from Community Development, Rural and Reconstruction Dept. which got its new name as Social Security and Empowerment persons with Disability (SSEPD). We achieved a new milestone when late Biju Pattanaik agreed to open a Home Management Training Center for women in the year 1991-92. We opened a school for the school going VI children named Bhabagrahi Model School for the Sightless in 2003-04. We took a step forward when in 2018 we installed Diploma in Special Education(VI), a course offered by Rehabilitation council of India. The Association has it’s multi-stored building with financial support and technical support from a German based charitable Organization named International Catholic Federation of the Blind, Helpage India and Govt. of Odisha. In our long journey of over half of a century we are able to cater to the needs of the visual impaired community.
